Ezra Dyer, terrific funny writer, his latest column excerpt

Speaking of the Ferrari 458 Italia:

" ... the 458 makes its horsepower peak at its redline. So if you want to access all 562 hp, you have to hang in there until 9000 rpm. In fact, if you let the tach drop below the 7000 rpm, it will start raining because you made Enzo Ferrari cry from heaven. " Love this guys writing!

Porfirio Rubirosa, racer of Ferraris, playboy on a world stage, and gifted with a B25 for his private plane

Digging out his Ferrari 250 gt

In a Ferrari Mondail at Santa Barbara

The son of the Dominican Republic's ambassador to France, he was fluent in 3 languages but conversant in 2 more, raced Ferraris, played polo well, dated the most famous women in the world of which some were royalty, and pulled it all of because he was that damn charming and suave. He even enjoyed the time when he was being chased by the FBI because they thought that he was some sort of a spy for the Dominican dictatorship due to his high-style life and mysteries. According to those FBI files, he was the muse for Ian Fleming to create the James Bond character.

Think Errol Flynn in his prime with aspirations to a global scale of bedding women with million dollar bank accounts, partying with world leaders, and enjoying the life of the rich and famous. He pulled it off in part because the dictator of the Dominican Republic was his first (of 5 marriages) father in law and titled him with "Inspector of Embassies" so he had travel and international access to any country. Diplomatic immunity too.

He schtupted Zsa Zsa Gabor, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake, Kim Novak, and Eva PerĂ³n... but married 5 times and 2 were relative billionaires Barbara Hutton inherited the Woolworth fortune, and Doris Duke "world's richest girl" (you oughta read her bio, stunning life http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doris_Duke )
She was so rich it was said she paid his wife, Danielle Darrieux, $1 million to agree to an uncontested divorce. Because of her great wealth, Duke's marriage to Rubirosa attracted the attention of the U.S. State Department, which cautioned her against using her money to promote political agendas, and they pointed out that in case of her death, a foreign government could gain too much leverage. Thus Rubirosa had to sign a pre-nuptial agreement; during the marriage, though, she gave Rubirosa several million dollars in gifts, including a stable of polo ponies, sports cars, a converted B-25 bomber, and, in the divorce settlement, a 17th-century house in Paris. She had affairs with Gen. Patton and Errol Flynn.
thanks to reader JohnDandy who guessed that this guy was the one to gift Rita Hayworth with the Ghia bodied Cadillac (it was some prince who did that)

If you prefer to draw your inspiration from 1950s Stuttgart, look no further than The Tygan Motor Company who have been producing their gorgeous “Speedster” 356 replica since acquiring the project from Chesil. The car oozed retro charm with white-wall tyres, lashings of chrome and an immaculate cream leather interior. It was surely one of the prettiest vehicles on show, with fabulous attention to detail and a high level of finish. Mechanically speaking, the trusty VW Beetle base is used; with a range of engines options available from a standard 1300cc Vee-dub unit to a 3.2 litre 911 engine. Prices start at £3,950 for the basic kit and the total build costs are estimated at around £25,000. The company says they have big plans for expansion in the near future, including the release of a Porsche 550 Spider replica and rumours of an entirely new

Ferrari Zobin

Ferrari Zobin Concept is an aerodynamic single seater with compact dimensions (4,114mm long and 1,855 mm wide), inspired by Ferrari Formula 1 cars.

Ferrari Zobin Concept’s exterior design is characterized by the original front structure made of a metal band, which supports the headlights and integrates the front spoiler and the front fenders, and gives the car an “open-wheels” look.

Ferrari Enzo

March 29, 2007 - We're not ones to comment on how good/bad a movie is, but we think we may have to hate the upcoming car-racing flick Redline. We haven't seen it, but more genuine exotic cars have been wrecked in the making / promotion of this film than we'll ever see in our lifetime - and that's a damn shame.

You all know about Redline actor Eddie Griffin's mishap with the Enzo the other day, so we thought we'd give the red Ferrari one last tribute by making it our Redline car of the Day. What makes this accident tragic is the fact that only 399 Enzos have been built (plus 1 for the Pope). That means that less than 400 of these cars exist in the world - and Ferrari isn't making any more of them.

The Enzo Ferrari was named in honor of its founder - conveniently named Enzo Ferrari. Basically designed as a celebration of the prancing horse's dominance in F1, the Enzo is the ultimate in street-legal Ferraris. (Only the Enzo-derived race-only FXX is more "uber".)

The F1 inspiration can be seen in everything from the functional (and controversial) front fascia to the F1-style steering wheel and paddle shifters. Thanks to Ferrari's liberal use of exotic F1-derived lightweight components (including the car's carbon fiber body and carbon ceramic brakes), the Enzo weighs just a hair over 3,000 pounds.

This light weight allows the Enzo's ultra-light 6.0-liter V12 - tuned to produce 660 horsepower and 484 lb.-ft. of torque - to really shine. This car can go from 0-60 in well under four seconds and has a top speed of 225 mph.

So it's a damn shame that another one of these rare Ferraris had to go and get crashed. But with a price tag of over a million bucks, even $250K in damage is deemed "fixable". As was the case with the Gizmondo guy's split-in-two Enzo, the Redline Enzo will likely be shipped back to Maranello for repairs. It will be as good as new in no time (we hope...)

Until the damage is "buffed out", check out more pictures of this rare Italian steed in our Media Gallery.

Ferrari 360 – Fastest Limo in the World

black Ferrari 360 Modena carbon fibre stretch limousine launched as the fastest limo in the world
We’ve seen some pretty cool limousines in our time (driving by of course, not the inside) but never one quite like this. Usually the folks stretching out a vehicle will do it with something that has a little more girth, giving its passengers a little party room.
In the case with this stretched Ferrari 360 Modena, it appears that the goal might be to ride in more of a sporty (cramped), luxurious style. This limousine has been dubbed the fastest limo in the world and still has those awesome gull-wing style doors, only bigger (9 feet).
According to owner Dan Cawley, the Ferrari 360
has been stretched to 23 feet while still maintaining a top speed of 170mph and can achieve 0-60 in under 6 seconds. The smooth ride can hold eight passengers and cost over $400,000 to modify to its current state, but for some odd reason none of those modifications involved including a mini bar…what where they thinking?

Ferrari 360 challenge stradale

Ferrari 360 is the name given to three models of Ferrari cars: the Ferrari 360 Modena, an enclosed two-door coupe; the Ferrari 360 Spider, a two-door convertible; and the Ferrari Challenge Stradale, the bare-bones version of the 360 Modena. Outwardly, only subtle differences differentiate the Challenge Stradale from other 360s. Don't let aesthetics fool anyone, the Challenge Stradale is comprehensively upgraded to include only proven performance enhancements.

Ferrari 430 Scuderia

Ferrari 430 Scuderia
These are the first photos of the new Ferrari 430 Scuderia, which you will be able to see in person at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007, unveiled by none other than Michael Schumacher.
The new Ferrari 430 Scuderia joins it’s siblings the F430 coupĂƒ© and the F430 Spider, and has a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.45 kg per hp thanks to a low dry weight of just 1250 kg Ă¢€“ 100 kg less than the F430.
Sitting in the engine bay is a 4.3 liter naturally aspirated V8 making 510 horsepower at 8,500rpm – a horsepower to displacement ratio of more than 100 horses per liter. This engine is mated to an F1 Superfast gearbox which shifts in 50 milliseconds.
The new model is a special series based on the F430 and is aimed specifically at Ferraris most passionate and sports-driving oriented clients. It uses an E-Diff electronic differential and F1-Trac traction and stability control combined in a single integrated system, tuned for a sporty drive naturally, one that is deserving of being in a Ferrari.

Ferrari Enzo

Enzo was created to celebrate the dominance of Ferrari team in Formula 1

Ferrari Enzo specifications
Top Speed: 362 km/h

The legendary Ferrari Enzo was named in the name of the racing car company founder Enzo Ferrari. The front section of this Ferrari supercar has derived directly from Formula 1, the entire body shape was tweaked for optimal airflow and cooling of the engine and the brakes. It is equipped with an ultra-light, 6.0-litre V-12 engine, that is capable of producing 110 bhp per litre of gas. Ferrari has promised to come out with a new version of a supercar based on the Enzo every four years. It is really interesting to see what kind of improvements can be made on such supercar, which is already nearly perfect.

Ferrari F430 Spider

Ferrari F430 Spider

This car is what it's all about.
Ferrari has simply outdone themselves. It's as close to motoring perfection as it gets. Take everything you could ever want in a sports car - and we mean everything - and the F430 Spider has it. Sexy, smooth, perfect curves that make your heart skip a beat (or three). Performance that will knock your shoes, socks, pants, and shirts off. An engine sound that will make Formula 1 drivers jealous. Handing so tight, so smooth, so precise that you'll have to pinch yourself to believe you're actually in a convertible.
In fact, this car is so terrific to drive that we're going to stop describing it right now. Words don't do it justice. Just rent it and you'll understand.
And in case you're curious - yes, we actually own it. Just like all of our cars - this is not a joke or a dream...the car pictured above is the real deal. Loaded to the gills with more options than we thought we possible to cram into a factory spec'd car, including:
  • F1-style tiptronic transmission (clutch is operated automatically)
  • Scuderia shields on the fenders
  • Red brake calipers
  • ENORMOUS carbon cermaic brakes. As good as it gets.
  • Custom black stitching on the interior
  • Daytona-style power seats
  • In-dash GPS-based navigation system & MP3 player, and the best darn Bose stereo we've ever heard in a convertible
  • More carbon fiber details than we can list - steering wheels, shift paddles, dash board....
  • Xenon (HID) headlights
  • Goodyear Run-Flat Tires
Our warning still does (and always will) apply: Prepare to be the center of attention when you rent this car. You will be gawked at. Grown men & women will coo like children when you drive past. Children will scream like babies. Dogs & cats will get along. Things will be weird - and you will love every single indulgent second of it.
As with all of our vehicles, delivery of your rental is available throughout the tri-state area (New York / NY, Long Island & The Hamptons, New Jersey / NJ, and Connecticut / CT), Maryland, Delaware, and the Northeast (including Pennsylvania / Philadelphia, PA and just about anywhere from Boston to Washington, D.C.).
